Machine type
Semi-automatics suit most people who want to learn: you grind, tamp and stop the shot. Super-automatics do all of that for you, at the cost of control. Lever machines reward skill but punish mistakes.
Budget
Around $150–$400 buys good espresso if you pair it with a decent grinder. Around $400–$900 usually adds PID temperature control and stronger steam. Above that, you pay for dual boilers and flow control that mostly matter to enthusiasts.
Boiler type
A single boiler makes you wait 30–60 seconds between pulling a shot and steaming milk. A heat exchanger lets you do both at once. A dual boiler holds two temperatures, which helps if you make several milk drinks in a row.
Grinder
A built-in grinder saves space and money up front, but you can't upgrade it later. A separate grinder usually grinds more evenly. Budget for both together, because the grinder matters as much as the machine.
