Enter your dose, ratio, and actual shot results to see whether you're on target — and what to adjust if not.
Dialing in is the process of adjusting grind until your shot hits its target yield in a reasonable time. Enter what you're aiming for and what actually happened, and this tool tells you which direction to adjust.
Target yield
36.0 g
Typical time window
25–32s
On target
Yield and time both land in range — if the taste is right, keep this setting.
Time is a symptom, not the goal — always dial in by weighing the shot to your target yield first, then use time as a rough sanity check on the grind.
Temperature stability and pre-infusion reduce shot-to-shot variation, so changes you make while dialing in actually show up consistently. These are our top-rated espresso machines.

Start with a known dose and target ratio (18g in, 36g out is a common 1:2 starting point), pull a shot, and weigh the actual yield while timing it. Compare both against your targets: if the yield is right but the time is far outside 25-32 seconds, or the time is right but the taste is off, grind size is almost always the first thing to adjust.
Change one setting, pull another shot, and re-taste. Resist the urge to change grind, dose, and tamping pressure all at once — you won't know which change actually mattered, and you'll have a harder time repeating a good result later.
Dialing in means adjusting grind size (and sometimes dose) until a shot hits your target yield within a reasonable time window and tastes balanced.
It's a process of small, one-variable-at-a-time adjustments, not a single setting you find once and never touch again — grind needs re-dialing as beans age or change.
