In fifteen years of testing coffee equipment, I have diagnosed a leaking coffee maker more times than I can count — in test kitchens, in café installs, and in reader emails that all start the same way: “it worked fine yesterday, now there is water everywhere.”
The good news: the vast majority of coffee maker leaks are fixable without calling a technician or buying a replacement. The cause is almost always one of a handful of things — mineral scale blocking a water path, a misplaced filter, a worn carafe seal, or a cracked reservoir. Once you know where the water is appearing, you can narrow it down fast.

Why Coffee Makers Leak Water
A drip coffee maker moves hot water from the reservoir, through a heating element, up a tube, and out through a showerhead over the filter basket. There are multiple points along that path where a failure can send water somewhere it should not go. Understanding the path makes diagnosing the leak much faster.
The six most common root causes of a coffee maker leaking water are:
- 1Mineral scale buildup — the single most common cause. Hard water deposits accumulate inside tubes and valves, gradually restricting water flow until it backs up and escapes through a weak point.
- 2Filter basket overflow — coffee grounds overloaded, wrong filter, or clogged drain holes force brewed coffee out over the rim of the basket and onto the counter.
- 3Cracked water reservoir — a hairline crack, often from a knock or thermal stress, allows water to drip from the reservoir before it even reaches the heating element.
- 4Failed internal seal or O-ring — rubber seals harden and crack with repeated heat cycling. When they fail, water leaks from the connection point between components.
- 5Damaged carafe or lid seal — a chipped carafe spout, cracked thermal carafe body, or degraded lid gasket causes brewed coffee to escape at the serving point.
- 6Internal valve or pump failure — the anti-drip valve at the base of the brew basket, or the pump in pump-fed machines, can fail and allow uncontrolled water flow.

Coffee Maker Leaking from the Bottom
Water pooling directly beneath the machine — not dripping from the basket area or the carafe — is the most alarming type of leak, and it is important to diagnose it correctly because the base of the machine is where the heating element and electrical connections sit. A sustained bottom leak is a potential electrical hazard.
Cause 1: Scale Blocking Internal Water Tubes
This is responsible for the majority of sudden bottom leaks on machines that previously worked correctly. Calcium and magnesium deposits (limescale) build up inside the narrow water tubes connecting the reservoir to the heating element. Once a partial blockage forms, water backs up during brewing and finds a way out — usually through a seam or past an internal seal that was previously holding under normal pressure.
The diagnostic clue: the machine was working fine, then the leak started gradually or appeared suddenly. If you live in a hard water area and have not descaled in 3+ months, scale is the most likely cause. Run a full descale cycle before anything else.
Cause 2: Cracked Water Reservoir
Reservoirs — particularly on lower-cost machines with thin plastic construction — can develop hairline cracks from a knock, being dropped, or repeated thermal expansion and contraction. The crack is sometimes too small to see under normal lighting. Remove the reservoir (if detachable), fill it with water in a sink, and hold it up to a bright light or window while squeezing gently — you will see the crack or wet patch almost immediately.
A cracked reservoir is rarely worth repairing. Replacement reservoirs are available for many popular machines, but if the cost approaches the machine's value, replacement of the whole unit is the practical answer.
Cause 3: Failed Internal Valve or O-Ring Seal
Coffee makers use rubber O-ring seals at every connection point between components. After years of heat cycling, these rubber seals harden and crack, losing their watertight hold. The anti-drip valve at the bottom of the brew basket — designed to stop coffee dripping when you remove the carafe mid-brew — is also a common failure point. When this valve fails, hot water or coffee leaks from the basket base onto the warming plate and down to the counter below.
Identifying a seal or valve failure usually requires opening the machine, which is only practical for users comfortable with basic electronics disassembly. For most home machines, a failed internal seal is a signal that the machine is at end of life.


Coffee Maker Leaking from the Filter Basket
Water or brewed coffee dripping from the filter basket area — usually visible on the warming plate beneath the basket — is almost always a user-correctable problem. The basket is the most interaction-heavy part of the machine, and small errors in setup cause the majority of these leaks.
Cause 1: Too Much Coffee in the Basket
Overfilling the basket is the single most common cause of filter basket leaks. The hot water saturates the coffee bed and the brewed liquid must drain through the filter into the carafe below. If the coffee bed is too deep or packed too densely, the drain rate slows — and water backs up over the rim of the basket. The standard dose for most drip machines is 1 to 2 tablespoons per 6 oz of water; exceeding this without a basket designed for larger doses is the most frequent culprit.
Cause 2: Wrong Filter or Incorrect Placement
Basket filters and cone filters are not interchangeable. Using a #4 cone filter in a basket-style machine, or using a filter that is slightly too small, leaves gaps between the filter and basket walls. Coffee grounds escape through these gaps, clog the basket drain, and force water over the rim. Even the correct filter can cause problems if it is folded at the sides rather than lying flat — a folded edge blocks drainage on one side and causes overflow.
Always use the filter type and size specified in your machine's manual. Pre-fold the bottom and side seams of paper filters before placing them in the basket, and press the filter flat against all walls before adding coffee.
Cause 3: Clogged Basket Drain Holes
The small drain holes at the bottom of the filter basket can clog with accumulated coffee fines and dried coffee oils. When the drain is partially blocked, brewed coffee cannot exit the basket quickly enough during a brew cycle and overflows the rim. This type of clog is invisible until the machine is brewing, which makes it easy to overlook.
Fix: remove the basket and hold it under running hot water. Use a small stiff-bristled brush or a toothpick to clear each drain hole individually. Do this after every 10–15 brews as part of routine maintenance.

Coffee Maker Leaking from the Lid or Carafe
Leaks at the carafe or lid are the easiest to diagnose — you can usually see the exact point where coffee or water is escaping — and they are often the cheapest to fix, since carafe replacements and lid seals are widely available and inexpensive.
Cracked Glass Carafe
Glass carafes crack from thermal shock (cold carafe placed on a hot warming plate, or cold water poured in), from being knocked against a hard surface, or simply from age and repeated thermal cycling. A hairline crack in the body or base of the carafe allows hot coffee to weep out during and after brewing. Inspect the carafe thoroughly under bright light — run your finger along the base seam and body.
A cracked carafe should be replaced rather than repaired. Replacement carafes for most major drip machine brands (OXO, Technivorm, Cuisinart, Breville) are available directly from the manufacturer or from third-party suppliers and typically cost $20–$50.
Worn or Damaged Lid Seal
Thermal carafes rely on a rubber or silicone gasket inside the lid to create a watertight seal. This gasket degrades with repeated dishwasher cycles, exposure to coffee oils, and general wear. When it fails, coffee weeps from the lid during pouring or accumulates around the lid seam during brewing.
Remove the lid and inspect the gasket — it should be pliable and seated evenly in its groove, with no cracks, tears, or flattened sections. Replacement gaskets are available for most thermal carafes and cost very little. If the gasket is intact but the lid is leaking, check that it is fully seated and locked before each use.


Lid Not Correctly Seated
On thermal carafes with push-button or twist-lock lids, partial engagement of the lid mechanism leaves a gap that allows coffee to escape. This is common when the lid is replaced in a hurry after cleaning. Always press or twist the lid until you feel or hear it lock fully — a half-engaged lid leaks under the weight of coffee.

- 1Dry everything and run a water-only cycleWipe the machine dry inside and out. Remove the carafe, replace it with a fresh one, and run a brew cycle with plain water and no coffee. Watch the entire cycle from start to finish. Note the exact moment and location water first appears — this immediately tells you which section to investigate.
- 2Descale the machineIf water appears from the bottom or the machine runs slower than normal, descale immediately. Use a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water, or a dedicated descaling solution. - 3Check and clean the filter basketRemove the basket and rinse it under hot water. Use a brush to clear every drain hole. Reinstall with the correct filter type, pressed flat to the basket walls. Reduce the coffee dose if you have been using more than 1–2 tablespoons per 6 oz of water.
- 4Inspect the reservoir for cracksRemove the reservoir if possible. Fill it at a sink and inspect all surfaces under bright light. Squeeze gently to force water through any hairline cracks. - 5Check the carafe and lid sealInspect the carafe body and base for cracks. Remove the lid and check the gasket — replace it if it is cracked, flat, or deformed. Make sure the lid clicks or twists fully into the locked position before each use.
- 6Run a final test cycleAfter completing whichever fixes apply, run another plain water cycle from start to finish and confirm the leak is resolved before using the machine with coffee again.

When to Replace Your Coffee Maker
Not every leaking coffee maker is worth fixing. There are four situations where replacement is the more sensible choice:
Internal tube or pump failure
If descaling does not resolve a bottom leak and there is no visible reservoir crack, the failure is likely internal — a cracked internal water tube, failed pump, or collapsed valve. Repairing these components requires disassembly and specialist parts. On machines under $130, the repair cost exceeds replacement cost.
Machine is over five years old with recurring leaks
Rubber seals and O-rings degrade over time. If you have fixed one leak and another appears within a few months, the machine's seals are at end of life across the board. Chasing individual seal failures on an older machine is rarely cost-effective.
Cracked reservoir on a non-removable unit
On machines where the reservoir is moulded into the body, a crack cannot be practically repaired. Replacement of the entire machine is the only option.
Water reaching electrical components
If a leak has been running into the base of the machine where the heating element, thermostat, or wiring is located, internal corrosion may have already occurred. Even if the visible leak is fixed, continued use carries a risk of electrical fault. When in doubt, replace.
