Before spending $500 on an espresso machine or $300 on a grinder, it helps to know how the reviews behind the recommendations were made. This page summarizes the proof and links to the full policies on how we test coffee equipment.

How are products tested and scored?
Three stages. Testing varies by product type.
Initial testing. Setup, repeated test brews or shots (count stated in each review), temperature and extraction checks where relevant, cleaning and maintenance, and comparison against competitors.
Long-term testing. 10 reviews so far include 60+ days of daily use, tracking performance, durability and maintenance; most are shorter and say so.
Blind comparisons. Side-by-side taste and build-quality comparisons against competitors, where practical.
A review is not published until the product has been used long enough to form an informed opinion. Testing periods vary by product type, and each review states its own.
What keeps reviews independent?
Editorial decisions are made separately from affiliate revenue.
Products are bought with the site's own funds. Free samples, loaner units and manufacturer-supplied review products are not accepted.

Four steps, in the open.
Acknowledge. Verified factual errors are acknowledged rather than edited quietly. Significant corrections, such as a score change, are noted on the page.
Verify. Claims are checked against the site's own data and independent sources before anything changes. Not every request is valid.
Correct promptly. Verified factual errors are corrected promptly. Score revisions based on new long-term data follow once the evidence is confirmed.
Thank the finder. Readers who identify a genuine error are thanked in the reply. Corrections are not credited by name in the article.
