Standard vs. inverted method

The standard method sits the AeroPress cap-and-filter-down on your mug from the start, so water begins dripping through as soon as you pour. It's simple and has one less step, which makes it a good choice for a quick brew.

The inverted method brews with the AeroPress upside down (plunger end down, open end up), so nothing drips through until you flip it onto your mug and press. This gives more control over exact steep time, at the cost of an extra flip step that takes a bit of practice to do without spilling.

Tips for a better AeroPress cup

  • Rinse the paper filter first. This removes any papery taste and pre-warms the chamber.
  • Stir after the bloom. A few gentle stirs after the initial bloom pour helps even out extraction before you steep the rest.
  • Dilute a strong brew with hot water. If you brewed concentrated (1:12 or stronger), add hot water afterward to taste rather than brewing lighter from the start — you keep more control this way.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most recipes fall between 1:12 and 1:15 for a concentrated brew you can drink straight or dilute, though some longer-steep recipes go as light as 1:17.

There's no single official ratio — AeroPress is flexible enough to support a wide range of styles.
